AGUA is part of a cycle of itinerant contemporary art exhibitions curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg. After its avant-première in  Geneva on World Water Day, 2017 March 22, AGUA opens  in São Paulo on November 22, before continuing its path in other cities around the world.

The 23 participating artists, coming from Brazil and from other continents propose, through their artworks (installations, video installations, video projections, photographs, sculptures, drawings, paintings, including site specific productions and new productions) a reflection on water and its importance to human beings, fauna and flora, where water management is a major challenge and a priority objective of the 21st century.

The participating artists are:

Nigol Bezjian(Syria), Clemente Bicocchi (Italy), Stefano Boccalini (Italy), Benji Boyadgian (Palestine/Finland), Sheba Chhachhi (India), Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil), Michel Favre (Switzerland), Noritoshi Hirakawa (Japan), Iseult Labote Karamaounas (Greece/Switzerland), Guto Lacaz (Brazil), Salome Lamas (Portugal), Marcello Maloberti (Italy), Carlos Montani (Argentina), Marcelo Moscheta (Brazil), Rosana Palazyan (Brazil), Luca Pancrazzi (Italy), Dan Perjovschi (Romania), Dorian Sari (Turkey), Eduardo Srur (Brazil), Maria Tsagkari (Greece), Laura Vinci (Brazil), Velu Viswanadhan (India/France), Vasilis Zografos (Greece).

The exhibition aims to raise public awareness on the notion of interdependence, essential to the conservation of our environment and to the future of our planet. When water is under menace, so too are all forms of life on Earth. Recognised as a vital life-giving element, water is essential to preserving biodiversity and ecosystems. As a human resource, it is at the centre of climate change and its consequences, a possible origin, or a subject of conflict.

Who does water belong to? Is water a private good or a public resource?

Drinking water is another important issue. With the increase of environmental pollution of water since the industrial age, it has become necessary to support access to clean drinking water as a fundamental right.

Art is capable of expressing reality with the power of its language. In AGUA, the participating artists,  are  stressing our collective responsibility towards water in our contemporary world.

The exhibition is a project by ART for The World, NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) affiliated with the UNDPI (United Nations Department of Public Information). Its main focus is to promote, through the universal language of the arts the diffusion of the principles foreseen in the Declaration of Human Rights. Since many years, ART for The World regularly collaborates with the Regional Direction of the SESC São Paulo.

AGUA Contemporary Artists and Water Issuses is a Art for The World project, produced and executed by SESC São Paulo.
